SHOULD YOUR PACKAGING DESIGN USE AI? WHAT THE 2026 DATA SAYS
everyone is asking this question the wrong way.
the real question isn't "can ai design my packaging." it already can, sort of. the real question is whether your customers will trust what it made.
new data says be careful.
WHAT THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY SAY
a june 2026 harris poll found that 78 percent of consumers say ai makes ads feel less authentic. 63 percent said they are less likely to buy from a brand that uses ai generated ads. 65 percent want brands to stop talking about ai in their marketing altogether.
that last number matters most. this isn't about whether ai was used. it's about whether the brand made it the pitch.
coca cola found this out the hard way. their ai generated holiday spot got called soulless two years running. toys r us released an ai film for their origin story and got mocked at the festival meant to celebrate it. both brands had the budget to do it properly. both chose speed instead, and both paid for it in trust.
THE PATTERN THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS
here's the part most founders miss. consumers aren't rejecting ai itself. they're rejecting brands that feel hollow.
a clutch survey from the same month found that 36 percent of people say seeing real humans behind a brand is the single strongest driver of their loyalty. stronger than price. stronger than product quality. 49 percent said real customer stories, not polished campaigns, are the most memorable format of all.
read that again. as production quality goes up across the board because everyone has access to the same tools, the value of polish itself goes down. what's left to compete on is whether the brand feels like it was made by someone who cares.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR PACKAGING SPECIFICALLY
using ai in your process isn't the problem. plenty of strong brands use it behind the scenes, for mockups, for exploring directions fast, for production shortcuts nobody sees.
the problem is making ai visible in the output, or worse, making it part of your story. "designed by ai" is not a selling point in 2026. it's a warning label.
if your packaging looks generic, slightly off, or like it could belong to five other brands, customers can tell now. they've built pattern recognition for it whether they can name it or not.
FINAL THOUGHT
use whatever tools speed up your process. just don't let the finished product feel like nobody was actually in the room when it was made.
that feeling is the entire thing you're paying a designer for.
cta: if you want a second pair of eyes on whether your packaging reads as intentional or generic, let's talk.
