supplement packaging is leaving the pharmacy (and that is not the whole story)

for years supplements looked like medicine. white tub, clinical sans serif, a leaf somewhere to remind you it is natural.

that look was never a strategy. it was a category code, and everyone copied it.

now it is breaking, and this week made it obvious.

what just happened

dieline covered greco gum, a mastic gum supplement from the greek island of chios. no plastic bottle. cylindrical paper containers, antique style botanical illustrations of chios landscapes, clean typography, a sun emblem. dieline’s read was that it celebrates where the ingredient comes from

instead of leaning on clinical minimalism.

a day earlier their weekly trends newsletter was about dissolvable strips from brands like stripit, inner glow, rin and sleep or die. vitamins turned into a pocket sized ritual, with the packaging doing most of the work. and in october coca-cola launched a prebiotic soda. wellness is moving out of the pharmacy aisle and into the main one.

my take

the clinical look was a default, not a decision. brands used it because the shelf used it. when every product looks like a pharmacy, nobody looks more trustworthy than anybody else.

but the new look will become a default too. botanical engravings, candy colors, ritual formats. give it a year and the shelf will be full of greco gum copies. swapping one costume for another is not strategy.

what i actually like about greco gum is not the illustration. it is that the packaging is true to the product and where it comes from. and the layout gives the product info and certification seals room to breathe. that is restraint doing real work.

what i would ask before copying any of this

what does my product actually promise, and to whom? what does the shelf around me look like, and how do i step out of it on purpose?

the strips are a good reminder that format is part of the design. they did not just redesign a label, they changed the object. think about the format before the label.

final thought

trends tell you where the shelf is moving. they do not tell you where to stand. use them to see the code everyone is following, then decide whether to break it or own it. if your wellness brand still looks like everyone else’s tub, let’s talk.
